Are you looking for some Winter Sun?
I do not mind winter and I love a good skiing holiday but a Winter Sun holiday is one of my favourite types of trips to book.
For reference, I considered Winter from November to March and I have established the minimum sun-bathing temperature as 23-24c (I have tested this extensively and I found 22c a bit too cool).
Abu Dhabi, UAE
As many of you know, Abu Dhabi is my absolute favourite UAE emirate and we visit every year (namely for some winter sun and some delicious Middle Eastern food). You can read about my first trip to Abu Dhabi (many moons ago) and about Zaya Nurai private island – which you can visit on a day trip whether you are staying in Abu Dhabi or Dubai (which is under 90 minutes away).
Bali, Indonesia
We have only been to Bali once – and we liked it, but didn’t love it. Harsh comment? Maybe. We stayed in Seminyak which was quite nice – but felt the beach let us down. What we loved? The Ritz-Carlton Mandapa Reserve in Ubud which made for a pretty spectacular stay.
Cancun (very near), Mexico
Cancun sounds really quite shabby, but a ‘few miles away’ from the strip you can find this little peace of heaven called Nizuc. I went for a girls trip a few years ago and it really was spectacular. Many readers have been and every time I get excellent feedback.
Franschhoek, South Africa
I have been to South Africa twice (and I feel I am due a return soon). On my last trip, we discovered this collection of villas in Franschhoek, at the heart of the wine country. La Cle was pretty special and I bet many of you would love it too.
Colombo (very near), Sri Lanka
Enroute to a recent trip to the Maldives, we had to make a tactical stop in Colombo, Sri Lanka (thanks to Google Flights, or otherwise we would have not found seats over Christmas). We spent our 20 hour layover at The Wallawa, which is only 20-30 minutes from the airport and it was a beautiful boutique hotel. We had a pretty memorable Christmas Eve which included spa treatments and crab curry.
Florida Keys, USA
Florida can be a fantastic winter sun destination – and quite a few of our friends have followed our advice and had some pretty epic trips during our Winter. If you are curious about the Florida Keys, we recently discovered and stayed at Isla Bella Beach Resort in Marathon and we quite liked it.
Jaipur, India
I was due to return to India for a coaching and yoga retreat in March, but it sadly got cancelled. I was planning to return to Jaipur and the stunning Oberoi Rajvillas after the retreat but sadly that won’t be happening. But maybe this could be what you need to visit India.
Maldives
Obviously yes and yes and yes. We went for Christmas after a long hiatus due to Zika and my (not successful) IVF treatments and it was probably one of the most meaningful weeks we have spent away. We stayed at the St. Regis Maldives at Voomuli Island on this occasion, but you can read some of my previous Maldives reviews here.
Marrakesh, Morocco
I had not been to Marrakesh for over 10 years and returned in 2019 on a last minute whim. It was the perfect last minute trip (I should write about it at some point!!) as we managed to get a perfect 28c over our 4-night stay at the Four Seasons (which was also excellent value compared to other locations). It also helps that it is one of BA’s 160 tier point destinations.
Palm Springs, California
Things cool down in Greater Palm Springs over Christmas much to the delight of locals and snow birds but boy, come February the swimming pools and golf courses are calling. We have visited quite a few times around Easter and has always been pretty perfect.
I hope you enjoyed my suggestions for some great winter sun holidays – and let me know if you go to any of them.
