Summer is here and with it comes my absolute time of the year – the very long days which beg for sunset gin & tonics, sea, pools and sand (which require the appropriate footwear and sun protection). And fabulous hotels to try for the first time… or return to for the fifteenth.

Without further ado, here are my Top 5 Destinations for Summer 2017.

Halkidiki, Greece

I first visited Halkidiki, located an hour from Thessaloniki, in Greece’s mainland 2 years ago, and really enjoyed my visit to Ikos Olivia. This year, Sovereign has challenged me to preview the stunning Sani Dunes which opened at the end of June and was a revelation in many ways. Owned by the same company, I must confess I was very impressed with this hotel and the Sani resort. You were able to follow this trip live across my social channels.

Alentejo, Portugal

Every Summer, I return to Portugal and my week is pretty much the same: 2 nights in the Alentejo, 5 nights in the Algarve and 1 night in Lisbon. It is part of my pre-nuptial agreement with Mr. O and we have never failed once.

This year, I wanted to try something new in Alentejo and asked my readers on Facebook – the answer was clear. Mrs. O has to try Sao Lourenco do Barrocal – and something tells me I will really enjoy it.

Algarve, Portugal

Same old, same old – but with new rooms (I first reviewed them 2 years ago) and a place where most people actually know me (and have no idea I am Mrs. O). The Pine Cliffs, A Luxury Collection Resort is better than ever and we look forward to returning. Friends and family will join us, as always, and I cannot wait.

Santa Barbara, California

Summer was the first Summer in 12 years where we did not go to California – my father passed away, my sister got married and we just couldn’t. But this year we are going back for over 2 weeks, and our first stop will be the lovely Belmond El Encanto in Santa Barbara. I haven’t been to a Belmond I have not loved (most recently, La Residencia in Mallorca) and I am very much looking forward.

Palm Springs, California

That place I went to by mistake and have been returning to every Summer. My plans are open at the moment as friends are deciding when and who can join us – and that will impact the villa we will choose. Last time we stayed at The Blue Door and loved it – this year, we will see! What I know is that I am looking forward to a whole week in this part of the world.

Where are you going this Summer?

xo

SAY HELLO

The closest I will get to a ski slope this season. I didn’t quite believe when the weather forecast actually said it would snow - but waking up to it this morning was pretty special. It won’t last but it’s life. Walking around today for our ‘permitted 1h of exercise’ definitely allowed for a change in scenery. ⠀
When this is all over - where would you like to go? And guess mine 🥰
Another week, another table setting, because why not? We are on our 3rd week of lockdown and I’m finding it much harder than before. The motivation to cook is dwindling but has to be done. What are you planning to cook this week? We are having zaatar chicken thighs tonight, Cottage pie tomorrow and steak Wednesday. Leave a comment below so it may inspire someone else, please. Every little helps (and thank you!)
It’s the first #PrawnThursday of 2021 and deserves to be immortalised on the feed. Our fishmonger took a little break and now I can say, it feels like proper lockdown. (For background, we discovered this great fishmonger who comes to our door every Thursday in April last year and he’s definitely made our lockdowns much better). Do you like #prawns or not so much?

Very wise words by my dear friend @molly.schoneveld. They really struck a chord. Here’s to a good first week of 2021.
As 2020 comes to an end, it will certainly be a year we won’t forget, ever. It was tragic in more ways than others, but there were also silver linings.
