The Aluminium-Free Deodorants I’ve Used and Would Buy Again
For years, I never paid much attention to aluminium-free deodorants.
Like many people, I assumed they simply wouldn’t work. Living in Southern Spain, travelling frequently and spending plenty of time outdoors, I wasn’t particularly interested in experimenting with products that couldn’t keep up.
My first aluminium-free deodorant was a travel-sized Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant. I bought it on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. It worked well, took up very little room in a wash bag and lasted far longer than I expected.
That was enough to make me curious.
Over the years, I’ve gradually tried a handful of aluminium-free deodorants and, somewhat surprisingly, I’ve never felt the need to switch back.
Today, most of the deodorants in our house are aluminium-free. That wasn’t really the plan. It simply happened over time as we found products we liked and repurchased.
Do Aluminium-Free Deodorants Actually Work?
The short answer is yes.
That said, it’s important to understand what they’re designed to do.
Do I still sweat? Of course.
Living in Southern Spain, spending time outdoors and travelling frequently means that is inevitable. I am at the beach most weekends so I get to test the heat pretty frequently.
What I have found is that sweating and body odour are not necessarily the same thing.
Aluminium-free deodorants don’t stop me sweating in the same way a traditional antiperspirant might, but they do keep me feeling fresh throughout the day, which is ultimately what I care about.

Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus
This was the first aluminium-free deodorant I tried and remains one of my favourites for travel.
The miniature size takes up very little room in a wash bag, lasts surprisingly well and the eucalyptus scent is fresh without being overpowering.
Sometimes the best products are simply the ones that quietly do their job, and Malin + Goetz falls firmly into that category.

Native Cucumber & Mint
I discovered Native during a trip to the United States and immediately became a fan of the tiny travel-sized version.
The Cucumber & Mint scent was my favourite and the miniature stick was perfect for carry-on luggage. In fact, my husband was equally impressed.
If you’re nervous about switching to aluminium-free deodorant, Native is probably where I’d start. It feels the closest to a traditional deodorant experience.

Sol de Janeiro Rio Deo
I discovered Rio Deo after realising, somewhere between Heathrow security and the departure lounge, that I had forgotten to pack a deodorant.
It turned out to be a very good airport purchase.
If you’re already a fan of Sol de Janeiro’s fragrances, you’ll probably enjoy this too. The scent is what makes it stand out for me and it’s one of the deodorants I reach for most often.
Ouai Cape Town
Of all the deodorants on this list, this is probably the one that surprised me most from a value perspective.
I loved the Cape Town scent and found that a single stick lasted around six months, making it one of the most economical products I’ve tried despite the higher upfront price.
Mine finally ran out last week and has since been claimed by a small member of the household, who apparently sees far more potential in it than I did. I will try the other scents next.
Caudalie Vinofresh
Caudalie’s approach is a little different.
The scent is lighter and fresher than some of the others on this list and feels particularly well suited to everyday wear.
It may not be the most exciting product here, but it’s one of the easiest to use day after day.
Best Aluminium-Free Deodorants for Travel

If I had to choose the two best aluminium-free deodorants for travel, it would be Malin + Goetz and Native.
Both come in genuinely compact sizes that take up very little room in a wash bag and are ideal for carry-on luggage.
The Native mini is particularly brilliant, while Malin + Goetz remains one of the easiest products to throw into a cabin bag without thinking twice.
What About Men?

One unexpected development is that my husband has made the switch too.
The men’s market still feels surprisingly limited compared to the women’s category, but after trying a number of products he has settled on two favourites.
At home, he tends to use Sanex Zero% or Nivea.
For travel, he prefers Old Spice deodorant sticks. They’re compact, practical and ideal for throwing into a wash bag.
Neither of us has felt the need to go back.
Final Thoughts
Looking at our bathroom today, it’s clear we’ve become an aluminium-free deodorant household.
That wasn’t a conscious decision or a health kick. It simply happened over time as we found products we liked and repurchased.
Do I think everyone needs to switch? No.
Have I switched and stayed switched? Yes.
These days, they’re simply what we use in our house.
