Spotting the Big 5 on Safari

On a recent trip to South Africa, I spent 3 days at the Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, located within the Kruger Park. During our stay, we went on 4 game drives (2 in the evening and 2 in the very early morning) and we were incredibly lucky to spot the Big 5 on safari.

The ‘Big 5’ is a term coined by big-game hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. They include the African lion, the African elephant, the Cape buffalo, the African leopard, and the White/Black rhinoceros.

Our first safari experience was truly spectacular – and being able to spot the big 5 on safari really was lucky. Or they do it on purpose so it looks like you are searching for a different animal each day – and then at the end of your stay, you do spot the big 5 on safari.

Whichever way it goes, I enjoyed being so close to these animals – obviously that had never happened before and unless I go on another safari trip, it will not happen again.

One of my favourite moments was when we were enjoying our private pool and an elephant just came over to get some water – hindsight is a beautiful thing, as now it seems like a spectacular memory, but when we were there… it was actually pretty scary. But it happened!

If you are considering an upcoming trip to the wilderness, I hope you are able to spot the big 5 on safari as it is quite the experience.
